Institute for Society & Genetics University of California, Los AngelesBharat Jayram Venkat is assistant professor at UCLA’s Institute for Society & Genetics. He has been conducting ethnographic and historical research in India since 2006 on issues related to science & medicine, temporality, ethics and design. His research has received support from the American Council for Learned Societies, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the American Institute for Indian Studies and the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation. His first book, At the Limits of Cure, will be published by Duke University Press and is the winner of the Joseph W. Elder Prize in the Indian Social Sciences. This work asks about what it means to be cured by tracing ideas of the curable and incurable in tuberculosis treatment and research from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, specifically in India. He has written about the history of antibiotic research, about drug resistance in India, and about what the world might look like when antibiotics fail.
